Black Cat in the Black Room

"Eureka, I found it!" This expression famously exclaimed by one of the greatest Mathematician ever lived, Archimedes. Eureka catches what actually science is. Science is all about discovery. When the scientist discover the truth about the nature, the truth need to be examined over and over, forming theory and established the fact at the next level. Both are not invincible. In his work, the Briefer History of Time, in page 14 Stephen Hawking says, "Any physical theory is always provisional in the sense that it is only a hypotheses, you can never prove it. No matter how many times the result of experiments agree with some theory. You can never be sure that the next time a result will never contradict the theory, on the other hand you can disprove a theory by finding even a single observation that disagree with the predictions".

Although fact are higher than theory, as many people known, it does not change the fact that the fact itself is fickle for science does not prove, it is predominantly a threefold process of discovery, collecting and concluding our prediction or hypothesis to be true, provisionally. Albeit facts hold more disciples and proven to be more stable in the course of longer time than what a theory does but still, the essential nature of both are the same.

There is an old wisdom saying, "it is very difficult to find a black cat in a black room." The good scientist know deeply  that the study of science at core, deal with uncertainty trying, to find black cat in a dark room with trial acts and ways in which perhaps, the black cat may not be exits in the room per se. It is highly possible that the Hypothesis of Science, may ended nowhere, far from the prior prediction. That is why science at core is a  progressive study,  a  day to day basis kind of knowledge.

Moreover, the etablishment of myriad facts by  respectable scientist  is  not  to say, they have finally found  the truth that is unshakable but a good thing about the discovery of facts, as Stuart  Firestein wisely highlight, science and the facts it discovered help us to "access ignorance". Well, it is true that Ignorance is the sure enemy of humanity for it will stops the progress. By facts being presented on board by science, it does not stop the progress but to open further questions and exploration, from the other side of the angle of the same thing, not just to verify something but more to falsify. And this is vitally important, for there is a clear tendency of most people to stop the progress by asking a question only for which they think there is an answer that is why, every people need to learn science and its method by any given chance.

Bringing the discussion to an end, we can conclude that science as a progressive study is provisional in nature so consequently, it cannot be said as the highest or superior subject under which everything should be judge and examined by and through it only. To illustrate this point, we can find the ethics of science but we cannot find the science of ethic. Furthermore, science is limited by science itself (Method and instrument). A telescope can only catches reality, within the reach of the power of the lens. The instrument and the method being used, cannot grasps all the micro and macro detail of the very thing within the reach of lens, more to says above the reach of it. The black cat in the black room dimension cannot be removed in science.

From the writer perpective, this discussion is a gantle call to every scientist to humble themselves, and willingly to be open-minded and listen to the voice of the other subject such as Philosophy or even Theology and as we all know it is not a contradiction. lot of  great scientists in one sense or another in history are also a keen Philosopher and Theologian. Nonetheless, although science cannot be said as the sole source on which truth derived, the good news still, and we cannot deny, science is a precious tools to help us progressively moving closer to truth of the nature every single day.
